What is the difference between slippers and moccasins?
When reading this list you might be wondering, what is the difference between moccasins and slippers? How do you know which is the best for you or the person you are buying for? Here are the details.
Moccasins and slippers are both types of footwear, but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart.
Design and Style
- Moccasins are a type of shoe that is typically made of soft leather and has a flexible sole. They often have a distinctive construction with a stitched seam around the top known as a “moccasin stitch”. Moccasins can be worn both indoors and outdoors and may or may not have a separate sole.
- Slippers are designed primarily for indoor use. They are often softer and more lightweight than moccasins. Slippers come in a variety of styles including slip-on, mule, bootie, and more.
- Both moccasins and slippers can be lined with fleece or fur to provide warmth and comfort.
Purpose
- Moccasins were originally traditional footwear worn by Indigenous peoples. Modern moccasins have evolved into a broader category of casual footwear suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
- Slippers are primarily intended for indoor wear, offering comfort and warmth. They are commonly worn around the house to keep the feet cozy.
Sole Thickness
- Moccasins can have a thicker and more durable sole, making them more suitable for outdoor use. Some moccasins are designed as a casual shoe for everyday wear.
- Slippers usually have a thiner and more flexible sole as they are not designed for extensive outdoor use.
Material
- Moccasins are often made of a leather, and they may have additional features like laces or beading for decorative purposes.
- Slippers can be made from a variety of materials, including fabric, fleece, suede, or synthetic materials.
While there is overlap in design, moccasins are generally a broader category of footwear that includes both indoor and outdoor options, whereas slippers are specifically designed for indoor use and prioritize comfort and warmth.

The finest slippers/boots I’ve owned have been sheep skin products by Northstar Trading on Whidbey Island, Wa. I wanted a pair for my newlywed wife last year; ordered in November (2023) for delivery by Christmas. Got an email thanking me for my order and “is now being processed”. After a few weeks of not hearing more, I tried to find status. Phone calls went to a recording, and on their www landing page was a banner “Do to unforeseen issues at our production facility, we are unable to take new orders at this time. Rest assured if you have already placed your order, we are working to get it delivered ASAP. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for understanding”.
I never received my order, thankfully my order was not billed to my cc either.
The same banner is on their page still today; and the page has been updated to show all of their products marked out of stock.
I found your list by trying to research what happened to the outstanding company because I love their stuff so much. This is July 15, 2024; your list is dated May 3, 2024. It makes me question the validity of the entire list, and the methodology to develop it. Thank you.
Who makes the slippers you have in the main picture right under the title?
Hi Kevin- It’s a stock photo. Several of the brands that we have listed make slippers that are very similar.
You leave out my pillow slippers, probably because you disagree with their politics.. I bought my last pair of slippers from your list.
Never again!!!!
My Pillow slippers are made in Cambodia.
The MyPillow website clearly states in the product descriptions of their slippers that they are ‘Imported from Cambodia’. They are not on our list because they are not made in the USA.
looking for open toed slide on women’s slippers size 5.5-6 which could be worn indoors or outside . If they are adjustable that would be great too. Not flipflops, not thick fuzzy, hot. Women with small feet and narrow heels have terrible time finding affordable made in USA and not too big. house, pool, casual slippers
Great suggestions! And my son has slippers on his Christmas list, so perfect timing, too!
Thank you for your article
My Husband and I have been buying our slippers from The Leather Works for years. Great product and Customer Service!

Patriotic purchases will help to boost the national economy.
Californian’s Footwear has beautiful full shearling slides and flip-flop style sandals. They are refined and beautiful and fully US made. I just ordered mine and i’m excited to get them.
Helpful article shared! Thanks for sharing it.
So many great brands here. I really love Steger;s Mukluks, like all of them. I think I need to steer my husband to their webpage.
I had only heard of two of these brands before reading this article. My family will be buying slippers for the holidays for elderly family members so I love that I have a list to work from.
Thank you for providing this site! It is so difficult to find products made in the USA. This is so helpful!
I ordered a hooded robe from Amazon and when it arrived, I was disgusted but not surprised to find it was made in China. The American people are going to soon realize the huge mistakes made when our stupid, politicians of the past sold out the United States to China and other countries. With this Corona virus now grabbing the world’s attention, we are becoming more aware that America is dependent on China for90% of the ingredients that go into most of our prescription drugs. (Probably likewise with the illegal drugs) We are now at the mercy of the Chinese leadership and this could very easily become a crippling disaster.
You are absolutely correct but, almost every store will only carry Chinese products because their profit margin is higher and people are used to buying cheap, throwaway Chinese junk. So, try and find “Made in America” labels!!!
I agree as well Todd. We have constantly looked at labels from origin for the last 10 – 15 years. I don’t mind anything but won’t buy China unless no option (electronics). We saw a Frontline documentary on PBS many years ago. They did a show on china products – had a previous WalMart employee interviewed. opened our eyes.
Not sure we can blame politicians for losing manufacturing to lower cost producing countries. Companies are driven by profit.
Is Pierrepont Hicks still in business? Can’t seem to reach them!
What is the brand of the slipper shown on your Title page? Thank you!
I am looking for non leather, non wool slippers made in the US. Any suggestions?
Hi Tracey,
Thanks for posting this information. Whenever possible I try to buy American, and it is a real challenge finding companies that consistently do so. Your blog will certainly expedite my search. Thanks again.
Is Okabashi considered a slipper? Even if not, a quality USA product at a price where most is junk.
