Why Shop Made in the USA?
Scour the internet for moisturizers, and you’ll see some brands highly recommended across the board. These brands tout the benefits of their ingredients, but what they don’t tell you is they’re likely getting paid to recommend them. Furthermore, these products are not made in the USA.
While USA Love List might get paid a small amount for recommending certain products, rest assured you’ll only find products we’ve thoroughly researched.
You’ll also find products only made in the USA. Why is this important? For several reasons:
Quality and Safety Standards
The United States has stringent regulations and quality standards for skincare products. Moisturizers made in the USA are typically manufactured under strict guidelines, ensuring that they meet specific safety and quality requirements. This can provide peace of mind, knowing that the product has undergone rigorous testing and adheres to certain standards. USA production allows the companies to keep a very close, watchful eye on the process. This allows for better quality control.
Transparency and Ingredient Regulations
The USA has regulations that require ingredient labeling on skincare products. This means that manufacturers must disclose the ingredients used in their products, allowing consumers to make informed choices and be aware of what they are applying to their skin. This transparency can be particularly important for teenagers with specific skin concerns or sensitivities.
Local Economy Support
Choosing products made in the USA can support the local economy by contributing to job creation and maintaining employment opportunities within the country. Additionally, purchasing domestically produced products may also help reduce the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation.
Accessibility and Customer Service
Buying skincare products made in the USA can provide easier access to customer service, as well as the ability to communicate with the manufacturer directly if you have any questions or concerns. This can be helpful when seeking advice or resolving any issues related to the product.
Cultural Preferences
Some individuals prefer to support local businesses and products that align with their cultural values or preferences. Buying a moisturizer made in the USA can fulfill this desire to support domestic brands.
Discount
Most American companies offer a discount on first-time purchases.

What Ingredients to Look For in a Moisturizer for Teens
It's important to note that everyone's skin is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Consider your teen’s specific skin type, concerns, and any allergies or sensitivities you may have when choosing a moisturizer. Additionally, reading reviews, seeking recommendations from dermatologists, or consulting with a skin care professional can also help you find the best moisturizer for your needs.
Nevertheless, certain ingredients arise to the top of the list for a teenager’s skin. You’ll not find every single ingredient in a moisturizer, but you will find top-of-the-line ingredient combinations in what we suggest.
Look for the following active ingredients in a quality moisturizer for your teen:
Important Ingredients
- Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that helps to exfoliate the skin and unclog pores. It is particularly beneficial for teenagers who may be experiencing acne or blackheads.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that helps to hydrate and moisturize the skin. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it effective at maintaining skin's moisture levels.
- Vitamin E: Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. It also has moisturizing properties and can support the skin's natural healing process.
- Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is commonly used in acne treatments because it has antibacterial properties that help to kill acne-causing bacteria. It can be beneficial for teenagers dealing with acne breakouts. Benzoyl Peroxide is a pretty harsh chemical. It’s been used for years to treat acne. Proceed with caution when using this ingredient.
- Zinc Oxide: Zinc oxide is a mineral that provides broad-spectrum sun protection by reflecting and scattering harmful UV rays. It is essential for protecting the skin from sun damage and preventing premature aging.
- Aloe Vera: Aloe vera has soothing and hydrating properties, making it beneficial for irritated or inflamed teenage skin. It can help calm redness and promote skin healing.
- Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to exfoliate the skin and improve its texture. It can help reduce the appearance of acne scars and promote a smoother complexion.
- Witch Hazel: Witch hazel is a natural astringent that can help control oil production, minimize pore size, and reduce inflammation. It is useful for teenagers with oily or acne-prone skin. It may not be the best ingredient for sensitive skin.
- Vitamin B: Vitamin B, specifically B3 (niacinamide), is known for its ability to regulate sebum production, improve skin barrier function, and reduce redness. It can be beneficial for teenagers with acne or sensitive skin.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: Teenage skin can be prone to inflammation and irritation. Moisturizers with anti-inflammatory properties, such as chamomile extract or green tea extract, can help soothe and calm the skin.
- Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is another AHA that helps exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and improve skin texture. It can also help fade acne scars and improve overall skin tone.
These ingredients work together to address the specific needs of teenage skin, such as acne, oiliness, and inflammation, while also providing hydration and protection. However, it's important to note that individual reactions to these ingredients may vary, and it's always a good idea to perform a patch test before using any new skincare products.
Other Qualities
Additionally, all (or nearly all) the products I recommend have these qualities:
- Cruelty-free: A product labeled as cruelty-free means it has not been tested on animals during its development and production stages. It indicates that the brand does not support or conduct animal testing.
- Vegan: A product labeled as vegan indicates that it does not contain any animal-derived ingredients. Vegan products are free of ingredients like animal fats, beeswax, honey, or collagen.
- Phthalate and paraben-free: Phthalates and parabens are chemical compounds commonly used in cosmetics and skin care products as preservatives or stabilizers. Phthalate-free and paraben-free products do not contain these specific chemicals.
- Clean: The term “clean” is used to describe products that are formulated without certain potentially harmful ingredients, such as sulfates, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, and certain chemical preservatives. The definition of “clean” can vary among brands and may have different interpretations.
- Fragrance-free: Fragrance-free products do not contain added synthetic or artificial fragrances. They are formulated without any scents or perfumes that can potentially irritate sensitive skin. A few of our recommendations use essential oils that have a natural fragrance.
- Natural ingredients: Natural ingredients are great, but they need to be vetted so they're safe on the skin. Example: poison ivy is a natural ingredient, but it's definitely not safe for the skin! The best teenage skin care products combine natural ingredients with good scientific research to ensure teenage skin is perfect skin!

Finally, it's important to note that these terms are not regulated by a central authority such as the FDA, so it's always a good idea to read the ingredient list and product descriptions
Skin Care Routine for a Teen’s Skin
A teen’s skin isn’t different from others in how you care for it. By following the steps below daily, you will see amazing results within a few short weeks. Apply product from thinnest to thickest, meaning liquids first.
Step 1: Cleanse
It’s been at least eight hours since you last washed your face. Even though you’ve been sleeping, you still want to use a face wash to begin your day with fresh, clean skin. This is especially true if you have oily skin; your sebaceous glands are at work 24/7!
Step 2: Tone
A toner gets rid of any lasting residue on your skin and prepares it to absorb your next few products. Avoid harsh alcohol, as it strips your skin of its natural oils and may actually increase oil production. Look for squalane or witch hazel-infused toners. If your skin is dry or sensitive, find a toner with hyaluronic acid.
Step 3: Moisturize
Choose a moisturizer that quickly absorbs into your skin while also hydrating in all the right ways. Our list helps you choose the best moisturizers on the market.
Step 4: Protect
We get it: teens want that tanned look, but honestly, in the long run, the damage to your skin just isn’t worth it. Think dark spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Sun damage is the number one culprit. Instead, use a sunscreen made specifically for the face. A good sunscreen made with zinc oxide creates an invisible shield against harmful UVA/UVB rays.
In the evening, follow steps 1-3. Add the following:
After cleansing, apply a facial mask. Choose a detoxifying, clarifying mask that absorbs oil and refines pores. Perform this step 2-3 times per week or as directed by the specific mask you choose.
You can also apply a spot treatment to blemishes.
Another option is using a face serum made specifically for oily skin. It should absorb quickly.
Other Suggestions
Use products as a system. While it’s not necessary to buy a single brand’s products, most quality skin care companies make their skin care products to work together.
Introduce your new products slowly. Try one new product a week so your skin can adjust to the new ingredients. You don't want to overload your skin's microbiome.
Give your skin time to adjust to the new products! I recommend using your full routine for two to four weeks.
Conduct a patch test on your inner arm or jawline for 24 hours before applying any new product to your face. This will identify any sensitivities or reactions to new ingredients.
